On 6 June, German ESA Astronaut Alexander Gerst will launch from the Baikonur cosmodrome to begin his ‘Horizons’ mission where he will become the first German commander of the International Space Station (ISS). Design & Data supported ESA’s livestream of his last news conference in Europe before his second launch into space.
Media were invited to the European Astronaut Centre in Cologne, Germany on 17 April for the opportunity to learn more about the Horizons mission, listen to brief contributions from science experts and ask Alexander questions.
The event included a welcome by Frank De Winne, Head of ESA’s European Astronaut Centre, an introduction of “The European Astronaut Corps” by fellow ESA astronaut Tim Peake, and a description of the “Horizons experiments”, by Volker Schmid, Head of DLR’s International Space Station team, and Matthias Sperl, DLR scientist.
Alexander Gerst then talked about the science of his upcoming mission, his experiences of space exploration and his upcoming role of station commander before taking questions and interviews from journalists.
Design & Data supported the event by assisting the onsite EAC event staff with filming and livestreaming activities. The Design & Data staff acted as integral team members and contributed to the successful online coverage of the event.
