AI-powered insight into ocean waves and forecasting.

Challenge

Ocean waves shape coastlines, influence shipping routes, affect offshore infrastructure and play a major role in weather and climate systems. But simulating waves is complex: wind, currents and atmospheric conditions constantly interact across local and global scales.

For ECMWF’s Destination Earth initiative, the goal was to show how AI-supported wave simulations can help scientists better understand and predict these dynamics.

Idea, solution

We developed a fully animated explainer video that combines scientific accuracy with vivid motion design. The visual language moves between iconic representations of key factors, fluid transitions and more technical views of the ocean and data systems.

This helped us connect the scientific foundation of the story with a clear and engaging visual flow. We also explored how machine learning could be visualised to show how AI processes can support and improve wave prediction models.

Result

The final video explains not only how wave simulations work, but also why they matter. From safer maritime operations to better coastal forecasting and climate research, the animation connects advanced modelling technology with real-world impact.

The project continues Design&Data’s work in transforming complex Earth-system science into clear and engaging visual stories. With excellent key-frame animation by the team, precise scriptwriting and a powerful scientific product by ECMWF, the video demonstrates D&D’s strength in this field.
