Challenge
The Starfish Barometer needed to evolve from a single-edition website into a platform that can support annual updates over time.
For the 2026 edition, the website had to present the latest Barometer results clearly, while keeping the 2025 edition accessible. Users needed a simple way to switch between years in the key Annual Barometer sections, including Overview, Ocean State, Human Pressures, Societal Harms, Protection Efforts and Opportunities for Humanity.
At the same time, the website had to remain easy to navigate, visually consistent and manageable within the existing inwink environment.
Idea, solution
Design & Data implemented the update directly within inwink, extending the existing system with custom code where needed.
A clear year-switching function was added to the relevant Barometer pages, allowing users to move between the 2026 and 2025 editions. The homepage was adapted with access points to both overview pages, making the annual structure visible from the start.
General areas such as Methodology, The Barometer, Supporters, News & Pressroom and Contact remain updated single-version pages.
Design & Data also supported the visual and editorial presentation with new graphic assets, summary materials, banners, print-related media and an animated Starfish graphic. A custom-coded hover fade-out effect was applied to make the navigation feel as smooth and intuitive as possible.
Some requirements needed dedicated technical solutions within inwink, including a custom-coded Bluesky icon because the platform’s icon bank did not include it.
Result
The updated Starfish Barometer website now provides a clearer and more scalable structure for annual ocean communication.
Users can access the current 2026 edition while still exploring the 2025 edition, making it easier to compare content across years and understand the Barometer as an ongoing annual initiative.
The result is a website that combines scientific content, visual storytelling and long-term maintainability within the inwink environment.
With custom-coded enhancements, updated assets, animated graphics and a refined content structure, the platform is prepared not only for the 2026 edition, but also for future editions of the Starfish Barometer.
