Challenge

Mercator Ocean International and the Copernicus Marine Service wanted to communicate the importance of ocean monitoring to audiences far beyond the scientific community.

Understanding climate change, protecting marine ecosystems and supporting maritime activities and their underlying science is highly complex and often difficult to communicate engagingly.

The challenge was not only to simplify scientific concepts without losing accuracy, but also to place the topic on an international platform capable of reaching policymakers, industry stakeholders and the wider public.

Idea, solution

Design & Data facilitated a media partnership between Mercator Ocean International and BBC StoryWorks, creating the foundation for the animated film A Sea of Change. Working closely with the partners, the project translated complex ocean science into a concise and visually compelling narrative that explains why continuous ocean monitoring is essential for understanding and protecting our planet.

Both scientific expertise and strategic communication worked hand in hand in this project. The editing involved high-quality motion graphics, immersive sound effects and music that gently captivates the viewer.

Result

The resulting film reached an international audience through BBC StoryWorks and successfully communicated the value of ocean monitoring in an accessible and memorable format.

The project received further recognition when A Sea of Change was awarded Gold in the category “Best Use of Animation” at the Data Comms Awards. The collaboration between BBC StoryWorks, Mercator Ocean International and Design & Data demonstrates how creative storytelling can help bring complex environmental science to global audiences.
