Sen4Rust:Fighting Crop Diseasefrom Space

Challenge

Wheat rust diseases are a major threat to global wheat production and food security. In regions such as Ethiopia, outbreaks have caused significant crop losses and economic impact. The disease spreads quickly and is influenced by weather conditions, making early detection and monitoring essential.

ESA and its partners developed SEN4RUST to enhance disease forecasting by integrating Copernicus Earth observation data into existing models. However, the underlying science is complex and difficult to communicate to a broader audience. Translating satellite data, modelling approaches and agricultural impact into a clear and accessible narrative required a structured and thoughtful communication approach.

Together with RE:MEDIA, we were tasked with developing a scroll-telling website that explains the project in an understandable and engaging way, while maintaining scientific accuracy and credibility.

Idea, solution

After careful analysis of the technical content, project goals, and narrative needs, we conceptualised a scroll-based storytelling experience built on WordPress with custom plugins and interactive elements that guide users through the SEN4RUST journey. Our approach focused on three key aspects:

• Narrative development – we structured the content into a concise storyline that explains the problem of wheat rust, the role of satellite data and the value of early warning systems.

• Visual and interaction design – together with RE:MEDIA and partners, we created a visual language that combines maps, data and illustrations to support understanding and guide the user through the story.

• Technical implementation – we realised the website in WordPress using custom plugins and scroll interactions, ensuring flexibility, performance and accessibility across devices.

Throughout the process, we balanced scientific accuracy with engaging UX and visual clarity, elevating complex Earth observation science into a narrative that resonates with diverse audiences.

Result

The SEN4RUST website translates a complex research project into a clear and engaging digital experience. Scientific content, satellite data and modelling approaches are presented in a way that remains accessible while preserving accuracy and depth.

The scroll based structure guides users through the topic in a logical sequence, from the impact of wheat rust to the role of Earth observation in early detection and forecasting. Narrative, visuals and interaction work together to create a coherent and intuitive user journey.

The project strengthens ESA’s communication by making the value of Copernicus data tangible for a broader audience, while demonstrating how digital storytelling can effectively connect scientific research with real world application.
