Challenge

The Copernicus Ocean State Report 7 (OSR 7) is a flagship report of the EU Copernicus Marine Service and provides a scientific overview on the state, variability and change of the global ocean  – particularly for 2021.

To increase the outreach of report to policy makers, the media and the general public, we were commissioned by Mercator Ocean to create a Summary, and additional supporting materials – including social media posts and media articles – that reach these non-expert audiences in a more engaging and digestible way.

Idea, solution

We’ve designed an interactive, animated summary that not only allows us to show condensed infographics, but also links to more recent information that relates with the OSR topics and expertise, ensuring relevance beyond 2021. To cater to journalists and policy makers, we introduced the “beyond the OSR 7” boxes, spotlighting up-to-date ocean news, but also particular stories of impact.

The supporting materials we produced – including: social media posts, website articles and a video – serve as additional means of disseminating the report and its summary, reaching a broader audience.

Result

Ocean science closer to the public providing them with a better understanding of our Oceans. Condensing the findings of the extensive OSR 7 scientific report into seven interactive double pages and the integration of current news and use cases makes the summary engaging to decision-makers, journalist and the public. With the additional help of the social media posts and the short video, we help bring Ocean science closer to the public  providing them with a better understanding of the our Oceans.
